Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 50 of 51

Respect Earned Slowly

The youth group gathered once more, their voices filling the church hall with laughter and chatter. Caleb stood at the front, his shoulders steady, his voice calm. He had faced Sipho's sharp words before, but today he carried no anger---only patience.

During a game, Sipho deliberately broke the rules, tossing the ball aside. The other children looked to Caleb, waiting for his reaction. Caleb walked over, knelt beside Sipho, and spoke softly. "You're strong, Sipho. But strength isn't in breaking rules---it's in guiding others. Help me lead this game."

Sipho frowned, but Caleb handed him the ball. "Show them how it's done."

Reluctantly, Sipho took it. He led the next round, his voice firm, his movements steady. The children followed, laughing and cheering. For the first time, Sipho's scowl softened into a smile.

Afterward, Sipho approached Caleb quietly. "Maybe you're not as weak as I thought," he muttered. "You... you kept calm."

Caleb's voice cracked, but he answered with humility. "I'm still learning. But I want to be better---for myself, and for all of you."

Sipho nodded faintly, respect beginning to grow.

Miriam, watching from the doorway, whispered a prayer: *"Lord, let my son's humility be his strength. Teach him that respect is not demanded, but earned slowly through patience and care."*

That evening, Caleb sat with his siblings, his heart lighter. For the first time, he felt not only accepted---but respected.
