Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 49 of 51

Resistance in the Circle

The youth group gathered again in the church hall, their voices lively as they prepared for songs and games. Caleb stood at the front, his shoulders steady, his voice calm. He had begun to feel a quiet confidence in guiding them.

But one boy, Sipho, crossed his arms and scowled. "Why should we listen to you?" he said sharply. "You messed up your own life. What makes you think you can lead us?"

The room fell silent. Caleb's chest tightened, shame pressing hard against his fragile dignity. His fists clenched, his breath quickened. For a moment, he wanted to walk away.

Then Miriam's words echoed in his heart: *"Grace is not about worthiness---it is about mercy."*

Caleb took a deep breath. His voice trembled, but it was firm. "You're right, Sipho. I did mess up. I made mistakes. But I'm trying to change. And maybe that's why I can lead---because I know what happens when you don't."

Sipho's eyes narrowed, but his scowl softened. The other children watched quietly, their respect for Caleb deepening.

Pastor Mokoena stepped forward, his tone steady. "Leadership is not perfection---it is growth. Caleb is learning, and that is why he can guide you."

The group resumed their song, and Sipho joined reluctantly, his voice low but present. Caleb's shoulders straightened, his eyes shining faintly. He had faced resistance---and chosen honesty over anger.

That night, Miriam whispered a prayer: *"Lord, let my son's honesty be his strength. Teach him that true leadership is not silencing doubt, but answering it with humility."*
