The church hall was filled with voices after service. Caleb had worked hard, guiding the younger children, arranging chairs, and placing hymn books neatly. Miriam watched him from across the room, her heart swelling with cautious pride.
Several neighbors approached him warmly. One elder smiled. "Caleb, you did well today. Service is the path to healing. Keep walking, young man."
Another added, "It's good to see you helping. You're changing."
Caleb's eyes flickered with hope. For the first time, he felt his effort was seen beyond his family.
But not all voices were kind. A woman whispered to another, loud enough for Caleb to hear. "He's trying now, but we all know his past. Can he really change?"
Another muttered, "It won't last. He'll fall back. Just wait."
Caleb's chest tightened, the shame pressing hard against his fragile dignity. His fists clenched, his breath quickened. For a moment, he wanted to walk away.
Then Miriam's voice echoed in his heart: *"Grace is not about worthiness---it is about mercy."*
Samuel stepped beside him, his tone steady. "Ignore the whispers. Respect isn't proven in one day---it's proven in every choice you make. Keep walking."
Caleb's voice cracked, but he whispered, "I want to believe I can. Even if they don't."
