Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 45 of 51

A Call to Serve

The morning sun streamed through the windows as Miriam tied her scarf and gathered the children for church. Caleb sat quietly, his hands folded, his eyes steady but uncertain.

"Caleb," Miriam said softly, "you have shown patience at home. You have faced chaos and chosen peace. Today, I will ask more of you. Pastor Mokoena needs help preparing the church hall. Will you serve?"

Caleb's brow furrowed. "Serve? In front of everyone?"

Miriam's voice was calm but resolute. "Yes. Service is not about being seen---it is about giving. This is your chance to show respect beyond these walls."

At the church, Pastor Mokoena greeted him warmly. "Caleb, we need chairs set, hymn books placed, and water prepared for the elders. Can you lead the younger ones in this?"

Caleb's heart pounded, but he nodded. He guided Ruth and David to arrange chairs, Esther to place hymn books neatly. His voice was firm but patient. "One row at a time. Careful with the books. Let's make it ready."

Neighbors watched quietly, some with surprise, others with approval. Caleb's movements were steady, his tone calm. For the first time, his leadership extended beyond the family into the community.

When the hall was ready, Pastor Mokoena placed a hand on his shoulder. "Well done, Caleb. Service is the path to healing. Today, you gave more than effort---you gave respect."

Caleb's voice cracked, but his eyes shone with pride. "It felt... different. Like I wasn't just helping my family. Like I was part of something bigger."

That night, Miriam whispered a prayer: *"Lord, let this service be the seed of transformation. Teach my son that healing grows when he gives himself to others."*
