Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 26 of 51

Brothers in Counsel

The community center felt different this time. Miriam sat in the waiting area, her Bible open, her scarf tied firmly, while Samuel and Caleb entered Mr. Dlamini's office together.

Mr. Dlamini greeted them warmly. "Welcome back, Caleb. And Samuel, I'm glad you've come. Sometimes healing begins when we walk beside someone we love."

Caleb slouched in his chair, his arms crossed. "I didn't want to come. But Samuel insisted."

Samuel leaned forward, his voice steady. "I didn't drag you here, Caleb. I came because I don't want to lose you. You're my brother. And I'm tired of watching you destroy yourself."

Caleb's jaw tightened, his eyes flickering with shame. "You think it's that easy? Just stop? You don't know what it feels like."

Mr. Dlamini's voice was calm. "Then tell him, Caleb. Tell Samuel what it feels like. Let him understand."

Silence filled the room. Caleb's fists clenched, his shoulders tense. Finally, his voice cracked. "It feels like drowning. Like I'm trapped under water, and the smoke is the only air I can breathe. And when I stop, I suffocate."

Samuel's eyes softened, his anger fading. "Then let me be the one to pull you up. You don't have to drown alone."

Caleb's tears welled, though he quickly brushed them away. Mr. Dlamini nodded. "This is the beginning, Caleb. Healing is not about perfection---it is about honesty. And today, you have spoken truth."

When the session ended, Caleb walked beside Samuel in silence. For the first time, his steps seemed lighter, his shoulders less burdened. Miriam watched from the doorway, her heart swelling with cautious hope.

That night, she whispered a prayer: *"Lord, let their bond be the rope that pulls Caleb from the depths. Let brotherhood become the bridge to healing."*
