Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 13 of 51

The First Step

The morning was heavy with anticipation. Miriam sat at the table, her scarf neatly tied, her Bible open beside her. She had spoken with Sister Grace again, and arrangements had been made for Caleb to meet with a counselor at the community center. It was a fragile hope, but it was hope nonetheless.

When Caleb returned that afternoon, his eyes weary, Miriam met him with quiet resolve. "Caleb," she said softly, "there is someone who can help you. A counselor. You don't have to fight this alone."

Caleb frowned, his jaw tightening. "Counselor? You think talking to some stranger will fix me?"

Miriam reached across the table, her hand trembling but steady. "I don't think it will fix you overnight. But I believe it can help you begin. You said you don't know how to stop. This is a way to learn."

The younger children listened from the hallway, their faces tense. Samuel stepped closer, his voice calm but firm. "She's right, Caleb. You can't keep going like this. You're breaking Ma. You're breaking all of us."

Caleb's eyes flickered with anger, then softened with something else---fear. He sank into a chair, his voice low. "What if I fail? What if I can't stop?"

Miriam's tears welled, but her voice was steady. "Then you try again. And again. And I will stand beside you, as long as you choose the path of healing. But you must take the first step."

Silence filled the room. Caleb's fists unclenched, his shoulders slumped. Finally, he muttered, "Fine. I'll go. But don't expect miracles."

Miriam's heart swelled with cautious hope. She whispered a prayer under her breath: *"Lord, guide his steps. Even if they are small, let them lead him back to the light."*
