Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 12 of 51

Seeking a Path

The morning after Caleb's weary confession, Miriam sat at the table long after the children had gone to school. Her Bible lay open, but her thoughts wandered. Caleb's words---*"I don't know how to stop"*---echoed in her mind. For the first time, he had admitted his struggle. For the first time, she had seen the boy beneath the anger.

She knew she could not ignore it. Love alone was not enough. Prayer alone was not enough. Caleb needed help beyond her hands.

That afternoon, Miriam returned to the community center. Sister Grace welcomed her with a warm embrace. "You look tired, Miriam," she said gently.

"I am," Miriam admitted. "But Caleb... he said he doesn't know how to stop. I want to believe this is the beginning. But I don't know what to do."

Sister Grace nodded. "There are programs, Miriam. Counseling, rehabilitation centers. It will not be easy, and he may resist. But if he is willing, there is hope."

Miriam's heart trembled. "And if he is not willing?"

"Then you continue to protect yourself and your children," Sister Grace said firmly. "You cannot force him to heal. But you can prepare the path for when he chooses it."

That evening, Miriam gathered her children. "I have spoken with Sister Grace," she said. "There are places that can help Caleb. If he chooses to walk that road, we will support him. Until then, we will keep praying, and we will keep standing strong."

Samuel's eyes softened. "Ma, maybe this time he'll listen. Maybe this time he'll change."

Miriam touched his hand, her voice steady. "We must hope, Samuel. But we must also be ready. Healing is a choice Caleb must make. Until then, we will protect this home."

Later that night, Miriam knelt by her bed, whispering a prayer that rose like a plea into the darkness: *"Lord, open his heart. Guide him to the path of healing. And give me strength to walk beside him, even when the road is long."*
