Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 8 of 51

Reaching Beyond

The house was quiet after Caleb's latest outburst, but the silence was heavy, not peaceful. Miriam sat at the table, her hands folded tightly, her scarf slipping from her hair. She had prayed, she had pleaded, she had endured. But now she knew: faith alone was not enough. She needed help.

The next morning, Miriam walked to the community center. The building was small, its walls faded, but inside it held voices of support---women who had endured, mothers who had fought, counselors who listened.

She sat across from Sister Grace, a woman with kind eyes and a voice that carried both strength and gentleness. "My son," Miriam whispered, her voice breaking. "He smokes. He refuses church. He raises his hand against me. I have tried everything, but I cannot reach him."

Sister Grace leaned forward. "Miriam, you are not alone. Many mothers have walked this road. You must protect yourself and your children first. Caleb's choices are his own, but you can choose safety. You can choose peace."

Tears spilled down Miriam's cheeks. "But if I send him away... will I lose him forever?"

"You may lose him for a time," Sister Grace said softly. "But sometimes distance is the only way for healing to begin. You cannot save him while he is drowning you."

Miriam returned home with a heavy heart but a clearer mind. That evening, she gathered her children. "We will continue to pray for Caleb," she said firmly. "But I will also seek help. This family will not live in fear. If Caleb refuses respect, he will not stay here until he chooses differently."

Samuel looked at her, his eyes filled with both worry and relief. "Ma, it's the right choice. We can't keep living like this."

The younger children clung to her, their small voices whispering, "We love you, Ma."

Miriam closed her eyes, whispering a prayer that rose like a plea into the night: *"Lord, give me courage to do what is right, even when it breaks my heart."*
