Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 6 of 51

Counsel and Courage

Sunday morning dawned with a pale light, the kind that seemed hesitant to touch the earth. Miriam rose early, her scarf wrapped tightly around her head, her Bible pressed against her chest. She had decided: today she would speak to Pastor Elias.

The children followed her to church, their small hands clutching hers. Samuel walked beside her, silent but protective, his eyes scanning the streets as if expecting Caleb to appear. Miriam's heart ached at the thought---her son absent again, drifting further into shadows.

Inside the church, hymns rose like incense, filling the air with warmth. Miriam's voice joined the chorus, though her heart was heavy. After the service, she waited until the congregation thinned before approaching Pastor Elias.

"Pastor," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I need counsel. My son... he is lost. He smokes, he refuses church, he raises his hand against me. I do not know how to save him."

Pastor Elias studied her face, his eyes soft with compassion. "Miriam, you carry a heavy burden. But remember, salvation is not yours to give---it is the Lord's. You can guide, you can love, but you cannot walk his path for him."

Tears welled in Miriam's eyes. "But he is my child. How do I let go?"

"You do not let go," the pastor said gently. "You set boundaries. You protect yourself and your other children. You pray without ceasing. And you trust that even in the darkest places, God's light can reach him."

Miriam nodded, her heart torn between hope and despair. She returned home with her children, her steps slower but her resolve stronger. That evening, she gathered them around the table once more.

"We will continue to pray for Caleb," she said firmly. "But we will also protect this home. No more fear. No more silence. We are a family, and we will stand together."

The children nodded, their eyes shining with trust. Samuel placed his hand on hers, whispering, "We'll be strong, Ma. For you. For all of us."

Miriam closed her eyes, whispering a prayer that rose like a flame: *"Lord, give me courage. Give me wisdom. And bring my son back to the light."*
