Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 41 of 51

Wrestling with Grace

The week after Caleb's first church gathering was heavy with emotion. Miriam noticed his silence, the way he lingered at the doorway during prayers, his eyes clouded with doubt.

One evening, she found him sitting outside, staring at the stars. "What troubles you, my son?" she asked softly.

Caleb's voice cracked. "They welcomed me, Ma. They prayed with me, sang with me. But inside... I still feel dirty. I still hear the laughter of my old friends, the shame of my failures. How can grace be real if I don't feel worthy of it?"

Miriam's heart ached. She sat beside him, her voice calm but resolute. "Grace is not about worthiness, Caleb. It is about mercy. None of us are worthy, yet God calls us His children. The church sees not your chains, but your journey."

Samuel joined them, his tone steady. "You're fighting yourself, Caleb. You think you have to earn grace. But grace is a gift. Accept it, even when you feel unworthy."

Caleb's fists clenched, his eyes burning with frustration. "But what if I fail again? What if I fall back?"

Miriam touched his hand, her voice trembling but strong. "Then grace will still be there. It is not taken away by failure---it is given to lift you when you stumble."

Caleb's tears fell freely, his voice breaking. "I want to believe that. I want to feel it."

Miriam whispered, "Then let your heart be open. Grace is not felt in perfection---it is felt in surrender."
