Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 35 of 51

Preparing for the Gathering

The village was buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming community gathering. Families prepared food, cleaned their homes, and readied themselves for fellowship. Miriam knew this was the perfect chance to test Caleb's growing strength.

"Caleb," she said firmly, "tomorrow we will host neighbors for the gathering. I want you to lead the children in preparing the house. Sweep the floors, set the chairs, and help with the decorations. This is your responsibility."

Caleb's eyes widened. "All of it? What if I fail?"

Miriam's voice was calm but resolute. "Then you rise again. Leadership is not about never stumbling---it is about guiding others even when you feel weak."

Samuel stepped forward, his tone steady. "I'll help with the heavier tasks, but the children will look to you, Caleb. Show them you can lead."

The next day, the house was alive with activity. Ruth carried cloths for the tables, Esther arranged flowers, David fetched chairs. Caleb moved among them, his voice firm but patient. "One at a time. Ruth, spread the cloth evenly. David, place the chairs in rows. Esther, those flowers look perfect---thank you."

At first, the children bickered, rushing and colliding. Caleb's jaw tightened, but instead of shouting, he paused. "Slow down," he said softly. "We'll finish if we work together."

By evening, the house was ready. The floors gleamed, the chairs stood neatly, the tables were set with care. Miriam walked through the room, her eyes filling with tears. "This is respect, Caleb. This is leadership. Today, you guided your family with patience."

Caleb's voice cracked, but his eyes shone with pride. "It felt... different. Like I wasn't just helping. Like I was leading."

That night, Miriam whispered a prayer: *"Lord, let this gathering be more than fellowship. Let it be a sign that my son is learning to lead with patience and strength."*
