Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 32 of 51

Small Victories

The morning after Caleb's failure with the goats, the house was heavy with silence. Miriam prayed quietly, asking for guidance. She knew that too much weight would crush her son, but too little would leave him idle.

At breakfast, she spoke gently. "Caleb, yesterday was hard. But failure is not the end. Today, I will give you smaller tasks. One at a time. Each step is a victory."

Caleb's eyes flickered with doubt. "Smaller tasks? Like what?"

Miriam smiled faintly. "Fetch water for the table. Help Ruth with her schoolwork. Sweep the kitchen floor. These are not grand duties, but they matter. They show respect."

Caleb nodded reluctantly. He carried the water, his arms trembling but steady. He sat beside Ruth, guiding her hand as she traced letters on the page. He swept the kitchen floor, each stroke deliberate.

Samuel watched quietly, his arms crossed but his expression softer. "See, Caleb? You don't have to carry the world. Just carry what you can. That's how strength grows."

Caleb's voice cracked, but his eyes shone faintly. "It felt... good. Like I wasn't failing. Like I was part of this family again."

The younger children clapped, their faces bright with joy. Esther whispered a prayer of thanks, Ruth hugged Caleb tightly, David grinned with pride.

That night, Miriam knelt by her bed, whispering a prayer that rose like a hymn: *"Lord, let these small victories grow into strength. Teach my son that healing is built one step at a time."*
