Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 3 of 51

Bruises and Boundaries

Night fell heavy over the small house, pressing against the thin walls like a storm waiting to break. Miriam sat at the table, her Bible open but unread. The words blurred before her eyes. She was listening---listening for the sound of Caleb's return.

It came suddenly: the door creaked, then banged shut. Caleb stumbled in, his movements sharp, his breath thick with smoke. His eyes were wild, unfocused, and Miriam's heart clenched.

"Where have you been?" she asked, her voice steady though her hands trembled.

"Out," he snapped, tossing his jacket to the floor. "Stop asking me stupid questions."

The younger children shrank back, retreating to their room. Samuel lingered, his fists clenched, but Miriam raised a hand to keep him still.

"Caleb," she said softly, "this cannot continue. You are hurting yourself. You are hurting me."

He laughed, a cruel sound. "Hurting you? You think you know pain? You don't know anything."

Before she could answer, his hand lashed out, striking her across the cheek. The blow sent her staggering, her Bible falling to the floor. The room spun, but Miriam forced herself upright, her eyes locked on her son.

Samuel rushed forward, but Miriam stopped him with a trembling hand. "No," she whispered. "This is my fight."

Caleb's chest heaved, his fists clenched, but Miriam's voice cut through the chaos. "You will not break me, Caleb. I am your mother. I will always love you. But I will not let you destroy me---or this family."

Her words hung in the air, heavy and unyielding. For a moment, Caleb faltered. His eyes flickered with confusion, with something almost like shame. Then he turned away, slamming the door behind him.

Miriam touched her cheek, feeling the sting of the bruise. Tears welled, but she did not let them fall. She gathered her children, pulling them close, her voice trembling but firm.

"We will not live in fear," she said. "This house will be a house of love, of faith, of strength. Caleb is lost, but we are not. We will stand together."

The children nodded, their small bodies pressed against her. Miriam closed her eyes, whispering a prayer that rose like smoke into the night: *"Lord, guide my son back to the light. And until then, give me the strength to endure."*
