Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 22 of 51

Small Steps

The days after Miriam's ultimatum were tense but quieter. Caleb lingered at home more often, his temper subdued, his movements slower, as though weighed down by the choices before him.

One morning, Miriam rose to find the yard swept clean. The broom leaned against the wall, and Caleb sat nearby, his eyes tired but softer than before.

"You did this?" she asked gently.

Caleb shrugged. "Figured it needed doing."

Miriam's heart swelled. It was a small act, but it was respect. "Thank you, Caleb," she said softly. "This is what I mean---choosing to care for this home, for your family."

Later that day, Ruth spilled water across the floor. Caleb bent down, helping her mop it up. She looked at him with wide eyes, whispering, "Thank you, Caleb." For the first time in months, he smiled faintly.

Samuel watched from the doorway, his arms crossed but his expression less guarded. "Maybe you're starting to get it," he said.

Caleb's jaw tightened, but he did not lash out. "I'm trying," he muttered. "It's not easy, but... I'm trying."

That evening, Miriam gathered her children. "Respect is not only words," she said firmly. "It is action. Caleb has shown us today that he can choose responsibility. These small steps matter. They are the beginning of healing."

The younger children nodded, their faces bright with cautious hope. Miriam whispered a prayer in her heart: *"Lord, let these small steps grow into greater ones. Let my son learn that respect is the path to redemption."*
