Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 19 of 51

The Fall Back

For a few days, the house felt lighter. Caleb stayed home, ate meals with his siblings, even joined in their evening hymns. Miriam's heart swelled with cautious hope, whispering prayers of gratitude each night.

But recovery is never a straight road.

One evening, Caleb did not return. Miriam waited, her scarf slipping from her hair, her Bible open on the table. Hours passed, and the silence grew heavy. When the door finally creaked open, Caleb stumbled inside, his eyes glazed, the smell of smoke clinging to him.

Miriam's heart broke. "Caleb," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Why?"

He dropped into a chair, his body slumped. "I tried, Ma. I really did. But it's too hard. Out there... it calls me. And I can't fight it."

Samuel's fists clenched, his voice sharp. "You promised, Caleb. You said you'd try."

Caleb's eyes burned with shame. "I did try. But I'm weak. I don't know how to be strong like you."

Miriam's tears spilled, but her voice steadied. "Strength is not about never falling, Caleb. It is about rising again. You have stumbled, yes. But you can still rise. You can still choose light."

The younger children huddled together, their faces pale with fear and disappointment. Esther whispered a prayer under her breath, Ruth clung to Miriam's arm, David hid behind Samuel.

Caleb buried his face in his hands. "I don't deserve this family. I don't deserve you."

Miriam reached across the table, her hand trembling as it touched his. "You are my son. You will always deserve my love. But you must choose healing, Caleb. I cannot choose it for you."

That night, Miriam knelt by her bed, her prayer heavy with sorrow: *"Lord, my hope is shaken. My son has fallen again. But I will not give up. Give me strength to keep believing, even when the road grows darker."*
