Where The Shadows Break

Chapter 16 of 51

Holding the House Together

Days turned into weeks, and Caleb did not return. At first, Miriam's heart clenched with worry each time the door remained closed at night. She prayed, she wept, she listened for footsteps that never came. But slowly, she realized: the silence was also a kind of peace.

The younger children began to laugh again. Ruth sang while sweeping the floor, Esther read her Bible aloud with confidence, David chased Samuel around the yard. The house breathed easier without the constant shadow of Caleb's rage.

Miriam watched them, her heart torn between sorrow and relief. She missed her son, but she could not deny the calm his absence brought. She whispered a prayer: *"Lord, keep him safe wherever he is. And keep us strong while he is gone."*

One evening, Samuel sat beside her at the table. "Ma," he said quietly, "maybe this is better. Maybe he needs to be away before he can change."

Miriam nodded slowly. "Perhaps. But he is still my child. I cannot stop loving him. I cannot stop hoping."

Samuel's eyes softened. "We'll keep hoping. But we'll also keep living. The little ones need you, Ma. They need this house to be strong."

Miriam smiled faintly, her hand resting on his. "Then we will be strong. For them. For us. And for Caleb, when he is ready to return."

That night, she gathered the children around the table. "We will keep praying for Caleb," she said firmly. "But we will also keep building this home. We will fill it with love, with laughter, with faith. Darkness will not win here."

The children nodded, their voices rising in a hymn that filled the small house with light. Miriam closed her eyes, her heart heavy but steady. Caleb was gone, but her family remained. And she would hold them together, no matter how long the storm lasted.
