If I Do Say So Myself…

Chapter 2 of 9

Love That Betrayed Me

After the collapse of my first marriage, I thought love had abandoned me forever. My heart was bruised, my trust fragile. Yet when he came into my life, it felt as though the sun had broken through the clouds.

He was charming, attentive, and seemed to see me in a way no one else had. I remember the way he laughed, the way his eyes lit up when he spoke of the future. For the first time in years, I allowed myself to believe in love again.

“I’ll take care of you,” he whispered one evening, his hand resting gently on mine.

And I believed him. I poured every ounce of love I had into him, convinced that this time, I had found the one who would stay. When I discovered I was pregnant, joy filled me. I imagined a home where our son would grow surrounded by love, where I would finally have a partner to share the burdens of life.

But dreams can shatter quickly.

The signs came slowly — unanswered calls, unexplained absences, whispers of another woman. Then one day, he was gone. No goodbye, no explanation, just silence. He had run off with someone else, leaving me to face the world alone with our child.

I remember sitting on the edge of my bed, my son cradled in my arms, tears streaming down my face. “Why wasn’t I enough?” I whispered into the quiet. But the baby stirred, his tiny fingers curling around mine, and in that moment, I realized I had to be strong.

The pain was sharp, cutting deeper than I thought I could bear. Betrayal left me hollow, but my son became my reason to keep going. I learned that love can deceive, but motherhood cannot. My children needed me, and I refused to let them down.

That chapter of my life taught me a harsh truth: betrayal does not define me — survival does.
