Between What Was & What Became…

Chapter 3 of 8

Banking Dreams

The bank was her second home. Its marble floors, the hum of computers, and the steady rhythm of transactions became the backdrop of her adult life. She wore her professionalism like armor — crisp suits, polished shoes, and a voice that carried authority.

Her colleagues admired her diligence. She was the one who stayed late, who double-checked every ledger, who never allowed a mistake to slip through. "You’re the backbone of this place," her manager once told her.

She smiled politely, but inside she thought: This is only the beginning. My real dream lies beyond these walls.

Pride and Pressure Her career gave her status, but it also deepened her solitude. While others left work to meet friends or family, she returned to the same small house, where her mother waited with warm food and quiet conversation. "You work too hard," her mother would say.

"I have to, Mama," she replied. "Every promotion, every paycheck brings us closer to America."

Her nephews watched her with curiosity. To them, she was both stern and inspiring — the aunt who demanded discipline but also carried the promise of a better life.

The Dream of America America was her constant refrain. She collected brochures, read articles, and even practiced her English with an accent she thought sounded more “American.”

"One day, Mama," she whispered again, "we’ll walk down streets where no one knows our past. We’ll start fresh."

Her mother nodded, though her eyes betrayed doubt. She had lived long enough to know that dreams often remain dreams. But she never discouraged her daughter — she let her believe, because belief was the fuel that kept her alive.
